Pond Preparation:

Pond preparation (Initial Stage)

 

The pond preparation of the 4 ponds used in SPO trials were as follows:

1.       Scrapping off all black soil after harvest.

2.       Flushing ponds.

3.       Checking soil pH.

4.       Applying Aqua Pond and ER-49, 3 weeks before stocking. Because farm soil is lime base, Aqua Pond was applied to correct the perennial problem of plankton bloom due to phosphate depletion.

Water Management:

 

1.       NS Series Super SPO was applied one (1) week before stocking and weekly application  maintained as per supplier's recommendation.

2.       Water change was minimal during entire culture, hence savings on pumping cost were realized.

3.       No additional aeration was required when NS Super SPO was applied because D.O. remained constant throughout culture period even at a stocking density of more than 30/M2.The standard of one (1) HP aeration requirement for every 500 kgs biomass was followed.

4.       Ammonia levels in water column during the entire culture remained minimal and negligible. No traces of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) was found on pond bottom after harvest, affirming the capability of bacterial strain in NS Series Super SPO to utilize sulfur and ammonia as nutrient source.

5.       No rice bran was applied, as is now generally practiced, since there is no scientific basis for such practice  and management felt that additional input of  rice bran will only further increase the organic load in pond ecosystem.

 

Salinity: 

 

           30 to 33 ppt throughout entire culture  

 

Feeds: 

 

          “HOC PO” Prawn Feeds was used throughout culture period for all ponds.

 

Harvest Data:

 

This is the first cropping of JLV Prawn Farm with NS Series Super SPO. NS Series ER-49 was also used during pond preparation in 4 ponds used as trial (Sept. 2003 to Jan. 2004).

* Ponds 8 and 9 were harvested at an early DOC  (ABW of 16.1 for Pond 8 and ABW of 13.1 grams for Pond 9) because farm gate price during the Christmas holiday season was at Php330.00 per kilogram. Management decided to take advantage of the good price
