ROLAND UNSON
President of Pangasinan Prawn Growers Association (1990)
Location : Labrador, Pangasinan
Pond History:
This is the second cropping of Mr. Unson with NS Series Super SPO. NS Series ER-49 was also used during pond preparation in both his farms (1989).

Observations
Improvement in water color, transparency, settling of suspended solids, soil and water pH upon every application of NS Series Super SPO. Water source during the entire cycle was turbid and high in suspended organic matter. |
Growth of thick fibrous algae was minimized. |
Stable average increase of 2 grams in ABW weekly was achieved under adverse weather conditions, high salinity and poor quality water source. |
Feed consumption took. more or less 1 hour. |
Black gills, broken antennae and tail rot were tremendous minimal compared to history of the farm. |
Pond bottom sludge was reduced from history of 6 cm to 1.5 cm after harvest with product application. |
No detectable odor of hydrogen sulfide was present after harvest. |
Frequency of water change was reduced. Usual practice was lessened to 10% change weekly with the use of the product. |

Observations:
NS Series Super SPO was applied at the start of the culture period. This being the fourth cycle or cropping that Mr. Unson is using the product throughout all his ponds on both farms.
This cycle started in June, 1990. On July 16, 1990, the earthquake struck. It was during this time that thousands died as a result. Many infrastructures of farms in Pangasinan were heavily damaged. Mr. Unson's farm relatively suffered minor damage. However, he was not able to change water for more than 2 months. Water source was very turbid and full of toxic gases and the color of water turned to a grayish- black hue; During this time pond water depth evaporated to a depth of 70 cm. with no water availability. Salinity at this point was reduced to 3 ppt due
to evaporation and added rainfall.
After the earthquake, dosage application of NS Series Super SPO was doubled, and as a result water quality was able to be maintained for more than 2 months (76 days). No over blooming or algal die-off occurred during this period and no outbreak of diseases was encountered.
During this period, analysis of plankton growth was closely monitored by the company. The following phytoplankton genera were observed: Ancystis, Synechococeus, Oscillatoria, Melosira, and Naviculla. These also served as natural food for the prawn in which prawns were actually observed nibbling and consuming these planktons.
After harvest, no odor was present and no sludge was observed on the pond bottom even after a period of more than 2 months without water change.
Mr. Roland Unson is the president of the Pangasinan Prawn Growers Association and a lot of fellow members can attest to this particular case which occurred after the July 16, 1990 earthquake.
